UBC WORLD DRUMMING

...Your relaxed but obviously knowledgeable style of teaching this seminar was greatly appreciated by the students...Dr.W.K. Faculty of Education, UBCO

... I had a really great time in the class, it was one of the most challenging so far in my masters program (believe it or not!) and was also my favourite so far! Thanks so much for getting me back into music and realizing how much I enjoy it...M.F.

I couldn’t be happier with my overall experience, as the drumming has been a welcome change from the typical courses found in my Master’s program. I will strongly recommend the course to anyone I know who registers in the Summer Institute. Thank you very much for the experience! … B. F.

I really noticed how once we get it, just how much everyone is enjoying themselves. Although many people only just met each other, we still feel comfortable laughing over our mistakes and working together to create something bigger. You really get that sense of community and interconnectedness. This week has served to reinforce my appreciation for music and especially music teachers as I can’t imagine how they manage to get over 30 teenagers all playing different parts together! …D. L.

Today was our last day of class and I want to thank you for everything. We learned a lot this week, got challenged and had a lot of fun. I will definitely recommend this class to other Master’s students...G.J.

I was surprised that my ear could help me to remember such a long sequence in such a short amount of time and it made me wonder what my students would be capable of if they were put up to the challenge. I really did enjoy this class much more than I thought that I would and recognize how valuable music is as a way to decrease stress. As a primary teacher, I was also thinking how good drumming would be for my students to help them “feel” syllables in terms of counting of rhythms, as this can be challenging for many students. Now that I have a foundation for drumming, I will need to remember and internalize this feeling that it has given me and look for other opportunities to bring it into my life and teaching practice. …B.L.
